Bacterial cellulose: structure, biomedical materials, and biotechnological platforms based on it

Project leaderPh.D. in BiologySenior Lecturer, Postgraduate student, Student

Description

The project integrates fundamental and applied research on bacterial cellulose (BC) synthesized by Gluconacetobacter hansenii. The structural organization of BC, the origin of anisotropy and layered structures are studied, and methods for purifying BC membranes using supercritical media are being developed. BC-based biomedical materials are created with assessment of their cytotoxicity for eukaryotic cells, as well as matrices for the immobilization of Escherichia coli cells, Fomitopsis officinalis mycelium, and Laetiporus sulphureus culture. The antimicrobial properties of the obtained extracts are investigated, and biotechnology for their production is being developed

Goal

Comprehensive study of the structure and properties of bacterial cellulose and the creation of biomedical materials and biotechnological platforms based on it for cell immobilization and the production of biologically active compounds

Key objectives

  1. Study of the structural organization of BC, the origin of anisotropy and layered structures
  2. Development of new approaches to the purification of BC membranes, including supercritical media.
  3. Creation of BC-based biomaterials for medical applications and assessment of their cytotoxicity
  4. Development of BC matrices for the immobilization of Escherichia coli cells
  5. Obtaining immobilized mycelium of Fomitopsis officinalis — a producer of agaricic acid
  6. Development of biotechnology for obtaining immobilized Laetiporus sulphureus culture on BC and study of the antimicrobial properties of its extracts
